Yellowing Conifer Sapling Still Alive?

edlincoln

Two weeks ago I planted some two foot tall bare root Blue Spruce and Pitch Pine saplings in dense clay soil, full sun. I may have overcompensated and planted some too shallowly. (A tiny bit of the top roots show and there is a little crater around a couple). Since then we've had unseasonably cool weather and a lot of light drizzle.

When I visited them yesterday I saw just a little bit of light yellow in the needles on the top.

Is this a good sign (they aren't completely dead) or a bad one (they are yellowing)? How long until you can tell if they survived transplanting? What can I do to help them? I can't water regularly beause I'm only down there every two weeks.

I didn't have time to plant them all....are the ones that were left in a bucket of dirt and newspapers still alive?

Is it too late in the season to plant more trees?
