Damaged Larch

A couple of weeks ago in a large storm with high winds and 5+ inches of rain, a large oak fell, and hit and badly damaged a japanese(?) larch tree in our yard.

The tree had been about 30 feet tall and about 7 inches in diameter, at the base. Its now about 8 feet tall, with only two lonely branches left.

Is there anything I can do to help the larch to survive and recover? Should I clean up the location of the break? Should I cover the wound with something? I'll try to get a picture of it, if that will help.

we need the pic ...

properly prune off broken parts .. no wound treatment ... no paint.. no tar ... trees heal themselves.. for lack of better words ...

the real issue is your personality .. and where it is ... and will you mind watching the recovery process ...

if its in the front lawn.. it might be time to go.. you dont want the neighbors pointing at your house and laughing.. as they walk by ... might piss you off ...

out back.. it might be enjoyable to watch how it will recover ...

get us a pic and let us know where you are also ...

You might be surprised how quickly larch can recover. I'd wait at least until the end of this growing season to judge whether to cut it down. The broken end should be trimmed to a smooth cut, tho, if possible.
