Transplanted Bald Cypress

I have a bald cypress that I had to transplant approx 2 months ago due to location. (I know this was not the ideal time to transport, I had to do it for a pending construction project)
The tree is approx 9 feet tall with a 3 in dia base.

After the move, the tree gradually lost all of its leaves and most of the branches turned black and are totally dead. Now within the last week, new growth is coming out near the base of the trunk up about 12 inches with the rest of the tree looking totally dead.

I'm guessing the roots have taken hold and the tree is alive. My question is where to go from here?
If the top of the tree is dead, do I need to top it or do I leave it as is until next sprIng?
For the record, I am in south Louisiana.

I am guessing the tree is a goner if the top is dead, but you will need to hear from the better-educated on this forum. If this was a deciduous tree and you only had lower lateral growth I would consider the tree a goner. You might get growth/root sprouts from the bottom, but it is unlikely it will become a "real" tree again, rather just a bushy mess.

I have had this happen with a BC I moved, but it was much smaller (one season in the ground from what was a one or two year whip when planted.)

I cut it back to the green wood. It is still about a season behind its sister that handled the transplant without dieback. It quickly established a new leader and you can't see the cut mark unless you know what you're looking for. (This tree appeared 100% dead for a while).

In my case, moving two BCs, one was a very clean, easy relocation. The other (I assume) experienced the dieback because I got in too big of a hurry when digging it out and popped the main root. (I moved them in winter and still nearly killed this one)

I would wait for an expert to tell ya for sure. I'd like to hear what he/she has to say myself.

Thanks guys. Anyone else have experience with this and how did the tree turn out?

is this just the species.. or some named variety???

It should be able to completely regenerate itself from the new shoots. IF the bark is dead, cut the top off somewhere above the live shoots.
My experience has been with 1 - 2" and under trees. This tree has used its reserves to regenerate, so be extra sure to keep it well-watered thru the summer and fall. It is highly doubtful that it can regenerate again this year if something else happens to stress it. Have seen this several times.

what scot said..

unless it was a grafted cultivar.. in which case.. the understock is probably just the species ..

I agree. You could wait to see if it regenerates any higher than 12 inches, or top it now. With a tree that size, I might be inclined to wait.

Here is a Thuja plicata seedling I potted up last year. Over the winter, it went completely brown, and this spring it looked like a dead stick.
I was about to throw it away when I noticed a couple of small green shoots about halfway up the stick. I cut it back to where the shoots were, and it's starting to fill in more now.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep watering it through the summer and fall and hold off on topping it until them

Give it plenty of water, you know that you can never "overwater" a Taxodium :0)
