What is the draw of this cultivar?

I would guess, beyond collectors, that bonsai enthusiasts, people who love pines and don't have much space and those with interest in growing trees in pots would all be interested in this tiny cultivar.

I was just curious.

To me, aside from being small, I just don't see much there. I don't mind if anybody else likes it, I just wondered what they liked about it.

I like 'Richard Lee' for the following reasons:

o because it's so hard to propagate, it's rare in the trade, found mainly in the gardens of hard-core collectors.

o it has clumpy, contorted growth with tight twisted needles. I really like that in a conifer. There's way too many "perfect globes" out there.

o it stays small; it'll never outgrow its space. Mine is prominently featured at the corner of a rockery. It's form leads to viewer to think that it's an ancient, tortured piece of Krummholz.

Hi Doug, it's found as a seedling selection by the late John Proudfoot from Scotland.

Thanks, Dave. I like the clumpy needles/growth, as well. I'd like this one more as an intermediate, so I could see the structure more. I'm sure somebody'll post one that's 20 years old, I'll fall in love, and end up cursing its growth rate.
