That's crazy - how small were they at a year?

  • taxo_man

Pretty sweet looking man. I imagine they have a slow growth rate?
    Thanks for sharing!

those are awesome, Dax. Did the seed come from a named cultivar?

Same broom or two different brooms?

Hi unpro: green/no wood & probably 1.5" tall with one bud. Year 2 as a single bud extends it produces internodes where more buds form and then the process keeps multiplying.

Yeah Jeff, I haven't measured but I will guess 1.25" on the first one and maybe 1.25 on the second, but probably 1.5 on #2.

Heya Dave, Jerry Morris sent them. He just writes something such as 'aristata wb seeds' and nothing else.

I have high hopes for #1.

Very cool Dax, only have a few aristata, but love em.

Those are great Dax...please put me on your list for when you start grafting them!!

Another nomenclature question: are these aristata or longaeva, and what exactly is the distinction between the two?

Keep up the good work...though we know it's really a talent,

    Right on Harv.

Barbara, aristata has resin "flecks" on the needles while its counterpart longaeva does not. Otherwise they're botanically-related, very much. I don't know how much, but, very much.

I'm not going to screw up and not graft #1 next-winter. I've made that mistake prior and paid for it.

Have a great weekend, Barbara, and all.

Yeah, that first one looks damn nice. Hopefully it maintains vigor so you can add that to your expanding collection.

Awesome, Dax. Both are great, but I really like #1. Joe Breau gave me one that Jerry Morris had given him. Mine is much faster-growing than yours.

Yep, guys, yep and yep #1 needs to go into both of your gardens.

Did Jerry Morris send you the seed itself or the plants? If it was the former, what percentage of them were dwarfed?

    They look awesome, btw :)

    Hi Random,

I'm updating this post. I'm just seeing your questions.

Don't quote me but the ones I have still (gave several away) are all still pretty small (5-6 I have.) I think (2) are a bit faster growing but this species is slow as dirt to get moving so I really can't say how fast they will grow later. The two I show are the slowest. If I had to put a guess figure on the others I'd say the two fastest are growing 2+ inches per year.

I've now named #1 in the photo. Here again is that photo with the name so folks searching the internet will be able to find the ortet plant:

Pinus aristata 'Sticky Whiskers'...............(W.B. seedling Dax Herbst, USA) RAN OVER WITH MOWER - NEVER GRAFTED.

'Sticky Whiskers' is an awesome name! One of the best, in my opinion.

It tries to remind you of a guy with a long beard that leaves for work in the morning and by the time he arrives home... not even he knows what's in it. Tacos, soda, saliva, sweat, ice, snow, bugs, chewing tobacco, Ha.

aristata 'Sticky Whiskers' was ran over with my mower. It's gone. I happened to remove its' cage the previous mowing period and forgot to put it back. I was trying to break the record for mowing time and I flew right over it.

No back-ups. This one is no-longer.

    Daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!

    RIP sticky fella :(((

Sorry for the loss Dax. Maybe if you can source more seedlings then the name can be revived at least.

    Hy!

Sorry for the bad loss, but...
i had a similar case in early May. Mowing as fast as lightning, chatting with my wife and brrrrzzz... Hey, where 's that Abies concolor 'Archer's Dwarf' standing? Arrrgh...
Perfectly and completely razored of the from now on single stem of 2 inch height :(...

Lawn and dwarf conifers sometimes don't fit, i've learned at that day....

I hoe you get nice similar seedlings from future sowing.

    Tell me about it!

I have one still but it's not 1/2 of what the other was. The other I destroyed, a ball, this one a low, somewhat ground hugging & spreading, plant. I've never liked groundcovers of any kind due to the hand weeding aspect.
