i would dig a hole near by .. and perk it ... and determine how fast water flows thru YOUR soil ...

and then i would take a hand trowel ... and dig ... CAREFULLY ... NEXT to the plant..

and then determine if it moist.. not wet.. and if so.. back off ...

pines like a drink.. and then NEAR drying ... in between watering.. in YOUR soil ... and that really is why no one can give you any better answer.. because we dont have YOUR soil ...

if you actually perk your soil... we can discuss what you find ...

but then we will want to know how you amended the planting hole ... etc

Thanks for the link. The site had fairly heavy clay but mixed in some Scott's $1.98 topsoil that claims it has some peat moss mixed well with native soil and followed with a good 2-3" of mulch.

i hope you kept reading and found out that amending a clay hole is not good ...

does your clay soil perk????

with a total lack of usable facts.. i am wondering if you shouldnt dig it up. and replant it HIGH ... like the link suggests ..

Yeah I read that in there and really hoping the tree takes. Although it's only been about two weeks now it seems fine. The clay was some of the worst I've seen. Although some birch were thriving right next to the spot I chose.

Also may help ease my worries as I also got the one year guarantee on this tree just really hope it will make it. Seems fine for now. You've got me worried now ken.
