Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Green Arrow'

I've got an open area where I thought it might look nice to plant a conifer with a very narrow growth habit. There are some lower growing shrubs nearby, so would prefer it not get more than 3'-4' wide at the base. This one caught my eye and would be interested in hearing any opinions and/or experience with it. I've never tried the Nootka Cypress, but they're listed as z4 hardy. It will be in good loamy soil that is well drained. Full am sun moving to full shade after 2-3pm. Does it need to be staked? Thanks!

Hi Bob,

Green Arrow can be pruned below as sometimes but not in all cases, this cultivar starts off it's life with a wide base. Long term, this cultivar when 40 feet or so tall, it is at least 10-15 feet wide below. The 'Conifer Quarterly' put out by the American Conifer Society once had a photo of larger ones.

You might go with 'Van Den Akker' or 'Strict Weeping' or 'Moon Shot'.

That's not much room for a tree. This is not a dwarf cultivar.

How wide do these get at the base after about 10 years? I'd rather not remove the shrubs, but they could be edited. Height is not an issue.

A nursery worker planted a green arrow in our yard, never ordered it, don't like it, too droopy and very skinny, and not doing well, trunk was squished when they hauled it over here a year and a half ago. Only good thing about this stick up in the air is the birds like to perch on the top. Maybe it will recover, but if it croaks it will be the one tree I won't be sorry to see go.

Hi Dax,

Thanks for sharing those photos. Its always helpful to see a mature plant. I'm guessing Âvan den akkerÂ and ÂmoonshotÂ are updated versions of Green Arrow. My favorite of the bunch is Picea glauca 'Pendula', but already have one growing by the house and would like to try something new. I was at a nursery over in the Twin Cities recently and they had a large Abies alba 'Pendula'(?) that I could have gotten at a reduced price. It looked a bit ragged and I passed on it. I know you're fond of 'Bruns', but I really prefer the Nootka types. Now its just a matter of finding the right one at the right price. Thanks again for the help.

CHAMAECYPARIS nootkatensis 'Green Arrow'
Hi- Can anyone tell me if the CHAMAECYPARIS nootkatensis 'Green Arrow' will go/grow into the water pipes? If so how far would I have to plant it to aviod it growing into the pipes.
