Hi all

I have noticed that Thujopsis dolabrata 'variegata' is more
common than the species also I have what I thought were
Thujopsis dolabrata but the plants are now showing small
amounts of variegation. Can anyone explain why this cultivar
is more common than the species.

Probably due to small cutting-raised specimens in pots in nurseries being more bushy and colorful than seedlings of the typical plant, which often look boney. To a large extent, the market determines what outlets stock. Nursery buyers tend not to be in a hurry to reorder items that take a long time to turn over. Retailers mostly set out stuff they think might sell, wait and see what happens. Promotional materials and campaigns are mostly the domain of suppliers. Busy garden centers may be lucky just to keep shelves stocked during the spring frenzy.

from where did you obtain these plants, Thuyopsis dolodrata Variegata is usually a grafted cultivar in the UK.

Bluespruce.

I have five. All are variegated, started from cuttings. It was the second plant I rooted from a cutting. Hoya carnosa was the first.

Sorry again, i'm completely off track here, I am thinking of Calocedrus decurrens Aureovariegata sold as grafted plants not the variegated Thujopsis.

'Nana' may perhaps be more prevalent in nurseries here also, again suggesting that a more bushy habit has more consumer appeal - at least with small stock. The largest variegated ones seen here all have multiple trunks. One in Seattle's Leschi Park is more than 56 ft tall. As with so many colored foliage variants of conifers, the variegated effect tends to diminish as the tree ages.

Ease of propagation probably also plays a large part in which cultivars are widely sold - the easier, the cheaper they can sell them for. That's what made 'Haggerston Grey' so much more common than 'Leighton Green' as the standard green Leyland Cypress on offer.

Most sold over here are green.
