I can't give a history, but I do know it is preferred that all latinized names change. Lewisii=Lewis, Dawsonii= Dawson, etc.

I enjoy my Lewis, but due to where I have it, it is very hard to photograph. Here's a recent pic but a fair amount of foliage is blocked by other plants.

It was selected in 1965 by Clarence McKinley Lewis of Skyland , Sterlington N.Y.
It was introduced by Carl Starker of Aurora OR.

It is not preferred that all Latinized names change; it simply must be a plant found before 1959(?) in order for Latin cultivar names to be "legal."

'Lewis' looks to be a very nice dwarf with dark green foliage. Nice plant!
