Spacing Colorado Blue Spruce Trees

I planted three rows of the Colorado Blue spruce trees 6 years ago. They were about a foot tall when planted. I spaced every tree 6 feet apart from trunk. I also planted the rows this far apart in a staggered row. So each tree trunk is 6 feet from the other trees trunk on the side, in front, and in the back. I NEVER thought the trees would all live. They did and they are very beautiful but it is very apparent some must go. I THINK?? I am beginning to think more will go than stay. I wanted a privacy hedge/windbreaker/ noise barrier etc. Anyway what is the correct spacing? I see lots of trees planted closely together but I also see some that are older and they all look half dead planted so closely together. So here I go again . What to do. Can you folks advise me. This wont work will it? I do hate to chop trees down but better now that later. Thanks for the help!

Start eliminating them Mary. Keep what you need until such a time in say 3 more years rolls along and you see it's time to remove more.

I photographed what is the best example of a windbreak I've seen to date. It's both Picea pungens and Picea abies (Colorado and Norway). I've labeled each photo for the viewer that may come across them searching the internet for info.

spacing is what serves a purpose... and what pleases you ...

perhaps you could have some fresh cut xmas trees for a few years... eh??

what happened to slowing down???

If this is something I can do with the Colorado Blue Spruce trees then great I will let them grow together. But I wonder what might it look like in say 50 years. I wont be alive then but I do care about what I am leaving for someone else.

on reviewing my thoughts ....

a block is a block.. it serves a purpose.. and it may or may not be best for the plants ... but the plants are secondary to the purpose ...

but.. in regard to the plants ... in the long run ... in regard to the various diseases of MATURE blue spruce ... i am talking 30 to 50 years down the line ... spacing them out would probably be better ... to increase sunshine and air movement ... etc ...

i hope that explains it better ...

and if you like the xmas tree idea .. dont forget.. you can cut the top 6 feet off a 20 foot tree ...

Ken and Dax, Thank you both for the help. I really appreciate it .I think maybe my main problem here is the rows are to close together. The picture looks like what I am doing just I put the rows about 6 feet from each other. How far apart do you think these rows of trees in the picture might be.

Opps! I just looked at the picture again that you sent and I was thinking it said trees 8 feet apart. IThen I saw it was the fence post 8 feet apart so the trees look more like 16 feet apart. Well Ken you might be right. Free Christmas trees. I think I may have to take most of these trees out! Dang! Now the question. What happens if I do nothing?
