Abies lasiocarpa needle-tip browning on some stems

Greetings,

We have a dwarf abies lasiocarpa - Arizona variety - that for two years now, has had some needle-tip browning. It's in the ground, on a mounded hill, NE corner of our house. It's growing healthily - the upward stems are about 6" long this year. Both last year & this year, some of the upward stems, after their extended growth was basically completed, displayed needle-tip drying/browning. This goes about half-way in from the needle tips. Last year, as the year went along, these stems dried up & shriveled, & all of their needles fell off or would drop off to your touch. The rest of the tree - about 3" high, rounded, double-main trunk - was fine. This year, the same thing is occurring, on different upwards stems, along with a couple side stems. Once again, almost all of the tree is fine. But, I am assuming that it will progress just like last year, that these stems will gradually dry & shrivel up. There is no sign of any insects, so it would either seem to be a disease or a water/soil issue. It's not been especially hot here yet - it can typically get in the 90's or 100's in late summer - so I don't think it's heat-related. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem?

Thanks,
Randy
