Nice Platycladus orientalis cultivars...?

For variety and fun I'd like to try a Platycladus "Thuja" orientalis cultivar that is mostly columnar/ narrow pyramidal but will grow okay, not too dwarf.

Have seen 'Van Hoey Smith' on the web that might look interesting

What can I actually find or order/get in the USA?

Hey, I was just gonna mention the "Morgan" but I can see my bud Ken has already done it for me... That a great pic... I like the winter color on Morgan but haven't found one yet... And yes "Van Hoey Smith" is really a nice plant too... I first saw it at Ken's- Ken, do you have a pic you can post of Van Hoey??? I got mine at Gee's... they have quite a few this year I noticed...

According to B. Fincham Platycladus orientalis "Van Hoey Smith" = P. o. 'Aureovariegata'. How that got started was unidentified cuttings were sent over from Europe labeled "ex Van Hoey Smith".

'De Groot's Spire' etc. belong to Thuja occidentalis.

Thanks for the clarification bboy -- I was just going to say that I can't find a T.or."Van Hoey Smith" anywhere, not even in Van Hoey Smith's book, or any conifer database !!!
PS. that T.or.'Morgan' photo looks just like a 'Southport' in winter colors. Is there any difference ? (Thnx)

I don't know those two. Welch & Haddow have 'Morgan' appearing in Australia with 'Southport' being shown in UK a few years later, with few details given. So using those brief references only 'Southport' being a renaming for UK distribution seems possible but far from certain. Pick fruits from a golden biota and sow the seeds, you will get a whole new generation of yellowish forms to add to the existing surplus.

see if you can locate a Collen's Gold - although not gold but more a lime green in my yard. It grows in a narrow columnar form with the lateral stems sweeping upward along the main stem. Mine has grown at a rate I consider fast and is currently about 8 feet tall and 20 inches wide. Iseli peddles it in their Fanciful Gardens Collection - where I got mine a number of years ago.

'Collen's Gold' is superb!

Marshall, would you mind putting up that photo you posted of Collen's Gold for me again for the ACS Database.

Thank you,

Dax

Dax - I'll attempt a better shot sometime today and get it to you. What's the largest file size image your e-mail client will handle?

Listed as 'Collyer's Gold' (Welch 1976) by Welch & Haddow:

"In Wansdyke 'Nurs. Cat.'. Slowly forms an upright bush; foliage green with rich golden growing tips"

Although Welch & Haddow is certainly not without mistakes, if Welch authored the name in 1976 then hopefully Welch & Haddow has it correct.

 o
D'oh! Nevermind.

That was Thuja PLICATA 'Collyer's Gold'. (The page header is 'Thuja orientalis').

For 'Collens Gold' they just have "Hort. Anglia 1983: Bright yellow columnar form".

I tried a small one but it didn't work out.

RE: Nice Platycladus orientalis cultivars...?

I understand what you're saying bboy (that 'Collen's Gold' is a Thuja plicata)...

Well Marshall, has your plant ever coned?

And my client, the ACS Database, won't accept any larger than 640 x 480, besides that's better viewing for all.

Thanks a lot, and if you can add anything like Dave's been doing as you saw on the gallery, please do so!

Thanks, many thanks!

Dax

RE: Nice Platycladus orientalis cultivars...?

For now I'm calling it as I received it
Dax, this plant is in a very hard place to get a good shot. I can only shoot from one side and if it's afternoon and sunny, the glare is pretty strong. And if the weather is cloudy, the image sort of blends into a big white pine in my neighbors yard. Here's the best I could do today and I threw in a 12 foot thuja occidentalis Degroots as a kicker. Collen's Gold is in the center of the picture. I'll try again on a less sunny day.

And it looks like I better take some cuttings as I was closely looking at the plant and found this.

RE: Nice Platycladus orientalis cultivars...?

I saw this "Arb" in a "rock" planter this summer, and got it. The plants in the planters were small Iseli plants... this one was marked C. pisifera "Mops", which was obviously wrong. Might this one in the pic be Platycladus 'Colleen's Gold', which was my guess when i got it...?

Have since made an offensive attack on the ground ivy, it's going to be an endless battle since it has numerous bases across the border.

How old is that Degroot's Spire? Pretty tall.
saw an Iseli plant T. occ. 'Zmatlyc' recently, similar to 'Degroot's' but had even more curled sprays and seemed greener, i thought it was different... the only reference to it I can find is a thread on GardenWeb thou

RE:Platycladus orientalis cultivars...?

'Collen's Gold' I mean

 o
RE: Nice Platycladus orientalis cultivars...?

Noki - looks to me like you have Collen's Gold as that's what mine looked like when I got it 4-5 years ago.

I have a couple 'Zmatlyc' and they grow slow, but I like the curled sprays. I have an e-mail from Iseli about the plant and it's mostly history as they know about and not much on culture etc. I could send it to you if you wish.

The Degroot's Spire came from Gee's and I bought it in 1999 or what ever year the first (and only) Northern Plant Symposium was conducted up at MSU. It was about 30 inches tall when I got it. 'Tis a nice one except for it's dull winter color.

 o
RE: Nice Platycladus orientalis cultivars...?

Marshall, thanks. I sent you an email yesterday too by the way.
Looks like it'll make it, maybe a wound from a long time ago that healed over? I can't say I know. I'm sure my Thuja 'Malonyana' I abruptly ripped out of the ground that now has one entire side of the main leader's bark stripped off deep into the center of the trunk and two feet in length, isn't going to like that either. I'm just hoping at this point 'they' make it through the winter. Enough about my lunacy.

Noki, that there foliage is platycladus all the way. Can see it with my Batman vision. Nice plant!

Dax

 o
About that Malonyana

Dax, I can fix you up with another Malonyana - just let me know - possibly a Christmas present LOL - I just read your e-mail and will get back to you in a bit.

As for my wounded tree, there's another similar wound right past the right edge of the stem - you can see the edge of the wound. It looks like those will heal over, but my concern is about a dead spot in the stem at ground level and breaking over at some point. With the experienced growth rate, this tree will probably become quite tall.

 o
RE: Nice Platycladus orientalis cultivars...?

Thank you kindly Marshall. I've taken several cuttings already and if and when I move, I (assume) what I've planted here the next homeowners will keep. If not, I'll bring them with of course. I actually think it will heal fine.

Thanks though,

Dax

Dave's picture shows the foliage color nicely - I wondered if you saw it
