Everything seems to grow...

...well not totally everything! After a cool but quite dry spring (comparing to the last 2 seasons) and then a completely dry and hot summer, up to now, I've lost aproximately 10% of my plants and still have another 10% struggling in the blistering sun. But everything else seem to grow! So here it is an animation between a cold January 2012 morning and a hot July 2012 afternoon.

Photobucket

what surprised me is that in the past week, both my Pinus mugo 'Carstens' started to turne to their winter colors, especially at the south side. Juniperous chinesis 'Stricta' as well took a brown purple color. Drought along with tempratures at 35-38 C (Somewhere below 100F)? what do you think?

'Carstens' 1

'Carstens' 2

also my beloved Picea engelmannii ssp mexicana 'Pervana' hasn't started to lift the new growth. I know it's like that in spring but I thought it should have erect new growth by the end of July... I can see that it started turning to wood half of the new shoots. Should I be worried it is stressed?

'Pervana'

Best regards,
Fotis

Hi Fotis, it's to bad that you lost about 10% of your plants inventory...
'Carstens' nr 1 doesn't look so good, I think it's days are counted.
'Carstens' nr 2 looks a little bit better, but the yellow colour does say something to me that it doesn't feel so happy.
The 'Parvana' looks good to me, it's natural habitat in Mexico looks quite simular to your situation now.

Sorry for your losses. Losing lots here also. Am looking around deciding what changes are to be made. When it becomes so much that it's not fun, it's time for changes. Good luck.

Ofcoarse I ment to say 'Pervana' instead of 'Parvana'.

I think you can save your other "stil alive" smal specimens by spraying them with wildpruf, but I don't know if this stuff is available in Greece.

RE: Everything seems to grow...

Thank you Cher. I wish everyone has bareable losses this hard summer. This July it's been only two years since I planted my first tree in my garden. So I still try out which species can be maintained with minimum aftercare in my area. I know now that Abies koreana and Abies procera for example are needy if they are to survive here. Best luck to you too.

Edwin, thank you for your reassurance on 'Pervana'. It's precious to me. Too precious to lose!
Unfortunately, a search for wilt-pruf here, came empty. I'll see if I find something similar. To increase my chances, I extended the irrigation system, just to save most of them.

Best regards,
Fotis

Good luck Fotisr, and to Cher. Hoping you can come through this without totally wrecked collections.

RE: Everything seems to grow...

Thank you Severn! Not wrecked at all. I'm optimistic. Besides, Edwin will replace everything that's gone and more, in September! I'm almost done making the list I have for him...

:)

Best regards,
Fotis

RE: Everything seems to grow...

RE: Everything seems to grow...

Edwin that's perfect! Is shipping with palette availiable and possible from your nursery to me? Because the list becomes rather big....

Best regards,
Fotis

Damn, I wish I could be putting in an order with Sir Edwin right now. Wouldn't mind a few of those plants from the Filip collection.

 o
RE: Everything seems to grow...

Yeah will... I know what you mean...

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Filip's Golden Tears'
and
Pinus sylvestris 'Filip's Blue Globe'

I have an eye on these since spring of 2011...
