Random, for sure it's a healthy one, but it's not differend from the old Abies grandis 'Aurea' which was already found in 1891...

Was the Abies grandis 'Aurea' the coastal or interior form?

Edwin, I think it is different from 'Aurea'. This one clearly has variegation throughout the tree, with some portions being gold and others totally green.
Whereas 'Aurea' is only gold on the newer growth, with a yellow-green colour persisting later in the year.
What do you say?

I don't think it is healthy - note that the yellow needles only have 1 year's retention, unlike the 3-4+ years for the green foliage on the lower branches. Leaves it looking sparse and bare. Whether this is due to a disease, or a nutrient deficiency, I don't know.

Random, the only info I'm familiar with is that it was found in Germany, so I don't know what it's source is.

Sam, because the 'Aurea' is a very old cultivar,there's no info availlable how it was found.
It could be found as a seedling, or as a branch mutation.
If it was a branch mutation, it probably was from a specimen like this one at Random's pic.

On the other hand, it could also be a disease...
I didn't read Random's blog first, but after I did I also think it's possible that this tree isn't a healthy one.

Random, get it grafted and tell us in 2015 what the result wil be...
