Center Of Vanderwolf Pines Thinning Out

I have 2 beautiful vanderwolf pines that are about 10 years old and have always been very healthy and I believe still are because there is alot of good growth at all the limb/branch ends. But this summer, I noticed I've lost ALOT of the inner fullness of the tree, to the point you can see right through it. I have never pruned it and didn't know you could do this to pines to promote inner fullness. My question is...can I expect the tree to fill back in? The tree is beneficial as a privacy tree, but not this summer. Is it too late to prune it now that it is a mature tree? The tree is probably 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide at its longest limb. Its such a beautiful tree.

It's natural, all pines do this. The lower branches get shaded out by the higher branches. Look at pics of mature pines, spot the bare trunks.

If you want to keep low privacy, start planting some evergreen shrubs (e.g. Rhododendrons) below the pines.

i agree with resin ...

and suggest ... clarify ... he means come 3 to 5 feet out .. from the pines... more would be better... and plant there ...

not literally 'below' the pines ...

some yellows and greens to offset the blue.. and selections outside the pine family would be great ...

dont continue the monoculture...

Yeah, I too think it's normal. My Table Mnt pine did a wholesale drop of lower, inner needles last autumn. Shaded needles on a shade-intolerant species are unproductive...
