Healthy hemlocks.

Just what is the status with hemlocks and wooly adelgids. I have a long-established island planting of several trees that I inherited. I removed the lowest branches, thinned the strand somewhat and underplanted with ferns. They seem healthy despite years of floods, drought and record heat. I really do very little for them yet they look terrific. Are all hemlocks doomed, is the concern exaggerated, are some immune to the adelgids, should I be spraying--I hate to use pesticides. Occasionally I will see a branch with the wooly critters but I just use the hose to wash them off but 99% of the trees have been free of the pest for the several years that I have been living with them. Thanks in advance.
