Wow, let it do its thing, perfect. (it's a tree.) You'll get occasional "wacky" growth spurts from all trees from time to time.

the change in its growth pattern.. would make me suppose.. that it is finally FULLY ESTABLISHED... and getting on with life ...

and if i am not mistaken... it is a rather aggressive plant in the PNW ... sam used to post pix of such.. that made me want to die ...

of all the plants in my MI garden.. that took severe hits this hard winter... and on a tree that had a 2 to 4 inch growth rate for the last ten years... mine threw out growth nearly like yours ... whats that all about ... ten years to get established...???

Your was obliviously containerized.

As a result growth was constricted.

Sitting in the ground for two years not much growth on the top but putting on a good amount of root mass. By the third year it is showing its true color for top side growth.

Ogon-janome will grow easily 6-8" a year here in the PNW, more of a medium grower than dwarf. Parviflora's will send up a central leader with exaggerated growth when they are happy and if unpruned you will have large spaces between branch intersections (this can look 'leggy') If you desire an open look to the tree this looks fine, and is actually more natural looking, but it will not be compact. I candle prune mine every year pretty aggressively to keep it tight (my preference) and to restrict it's size.

If you typically get high amounts of rainfall I personally would let it be. If you got more rainfall than usual this season, I'd prune it. Parvs are know for putting out aggressive growth during high rainfall.

We had alot more rainfall this past June than usual so many of my parvs put on excessive growth. Since the rainfall is not typical I pruned them so that they stay balanced.

I have a feeling you're in the PNW as that cultivar puts out minimal growth here in the midwest...even if you're patient enough to leave the rootstock on for 5 years.

I have a 5 year old and even with this rainfall it grew a whopping 3". My other 4 year old put out a whopping 1".
