How much did you pay for the oak?

    Very healthy and flourishing looking!

Do you wrap or tie your sciadopitys in the winter? Since you are in zone 5, you must get a fair amount of snow.

    Lots of big boys there!

I'd ask the same question about the Oak. That is a primo specimen...more dense than typical and huge!

    perhaps a better question....

how old is the oak ...

i am sure.. as far as wifey knows... it was a gift from a friend.. lol..

    ken

ps: and what is the oak .... seems i have seen it somewhere recently ... Quercus dentata 'Pinnatifida'???

  • whaas_5a

You got it! Not that I've seen alot of these in person but that specimen could be up to 25 years old. Which makes it older than any other plant shown.

Just speculating and marveling at how full it is!

Good mix of conifers and deciduous anyway you cut it.

Here is my 4' year old.

I'm interested to hear about your 'Pinnatifida', as well. Size at purchase, cost, where purchased, how long you've had it??? That's a primo specimen.

Pin oak is customarily Q. palustris.

David, I'm talking about the oak in your very last pic.

Its not a pin oak as the bark and leaf aren't right. Take another look or post a pic of the leaf.

    Thanks for the additional pics!

Did you prune your American Smoke Tree or did you just let it go as is? I ordered one from Forestfarm, it croaked (roots rotted in the pot when I got it). Then I ordered one from Whitman and it was Grace. Still have to get one one of these days.

Your Oak is Quercus dentata 'Pinnatifida', not Pin Oak. Go ahead and prune off that root stock.

Great garden, I like your big Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst' which you planted at a perfect spot!

Whoever sold you a pin oak just lost a minimum 1000 dollars on that sale. Lucky you!

Yep, echoing Whaas's comments: prune off the rootstock and re-tag as: Quercus dentata 'Pinnatifida'.

The grafted oak looks like it has a burr oak understock, so the graft can't be a "black" oak. Don't have an idea what oak it is, but not pin.

    Edit: OK, whaas nailed it.
