reflected sun.. in winter is also an issue ... as the tissue heats and thaws on a sunny day ... and refreezes at night ...

track back and remove the dead parts ...

Like Ken mentioned this looks like it could be some type of sidewalk salt damage. Last winter I used salt on the driveway to break up ice and in the spring our junipers along the driveway looked very similar to this photo.

Not positive, just an idea.

you could really add the the entry way .. by getting rid of the old man.. and putting in something better ... though i dont know if i would limit myself to a conifer ... blasphemy.. i know.. lol ...
