Semidesert conifers (Volume 1)

Generally the conifer cultivars, selected from dry areas up to 400 mm (cca 16 inch) rain a year.

Dear Friends,

You can enjoy here never heard and never seen (sometimes forgotten) conifer wonders of the dry areas of the world. As they come to better conditions, all of them change to a vigorous life, and the gardens become new stars.

How to start a semidesert adventure? I guess, with the most deep desert found conifer, the Cupressus dupreziana, which is at home in Tassili, Tamanrasset of Ahaggar Mts. in southern Algeria.

This plants are selected in a 30 years period. Hungarian breeders followed the concept of Debreczy, Zsolt, who is working on the world's conifering renewal. Other breeders were joined to his concept, and started to breed the conifers of the dry areas of the world.

What you see here, it's the "harvest time". My friends are dreaming of non-irrigated pinetums...
    Let's dream together.

No Cupressus forbesii or Cupressus stephensonii? Have you had any experience with this species or are they rather rare in Europe?

    Shastensis,
american cypresses are since long ago known for botanists and collectors here. Cupressus sempervirens is not safe in our climate. American cypresses are generally ok up to z6, the Cupressus bakeri even to z5 in my garden to -30 Celsius. As I see, the late April, May frosts are the biggest enemies of cypresses, as the plants are awekened from their winter "dream".
The new cultivars here are the resume of the last 30 years collecting and selecting of cypresses by hungarian botanists in the States and Himalaya Mts.
I guess, some collectors in America will be interested to "repatriate" this beautiful cultivars...

    C. forbesii is rather rare, but the C. stephensonii comes later with new selections.
North of us C. bakeri in known in Sweden, many others in the British isles or Holland, but they get not enough summer heat and sunshine. Thats why generally C. arizonica is the most known species with his blue selections.

Enjoy the living and vibrating descriptions of Hódi Tóth for his own cultivars. He told me today, that about 25 years ago he read an article about the "vanising cupressus" species on the desert sides. Wow, nice to know that there are so many different cultivars of rare/endangered species. When was the seed collected that many of the stephensonii, montana and bakeri came from? I have a good amount of C. forbesii seed if you would like any. I also have some bakeri.

    Hi Zsolt,

a lot of these cultivars are very beautiful. Is it possible to buy some in an Hungarian Nursery? Are they experienced shipping plants to Germany? It could be very interesting to plant some more very hardy Cupressus-Cultivars in colder regions in Germany.

    Thanks

Zsolt, this is a very, very, very interesting thread.

Does C.g. 'Birdshelter' turn orange in fall?

C.cashmeriana I am going to plant here. I cannot resist. I already ordered (10) Cupressus bakeri from the University of Idaho for Fall delivery. I will plant half of them and store the others in my hoophouse.

    Regards,

    Dax

    Friends,
thanks, and I used to offer to my friends to start with Cupressus bakeri, if you are not sure, what accepts your garden of Cupressus. Later on you can go on to other species. The hardiness is usually up to z6-7 in saved circumstances.
Shastensis, send your seeds to Dax or Nate. I hope you remember the extraordinary photo of him from the Denver BG's giant Cupressus bakeri.
To contact the breeder Hódi Tóth search to the words Arizonica Kertészet here http://customlinux.virtuozzo.hu:9001/arizonica/
He has a small nursery there

Dax, Birdshelter is bronze in winter like some platycladus cultivars. I photographed in march in -2 Celsius, and we were both frozen after some hours. That time I was going to make a rigid documentation for this cultivars are ever exist. Next week hopely we could make a new series, which will be more living, as it looked like in March.

Plant first Cupressus cashmeriana first to the glasshouse, in hard frosts will be frozen, what is over the mulch.

I'm very pleased of the interest, but this plants are mostly valid to the southern states, back to the really semideserts, where they came from.

Later I show other specieses, as Cedrus libani, or vaste Abies cultivars. My dream, that in Anchorage the main street becomes some of them sometime...

Selecting to climate is a hard job, and takes even 100 years. Dr. Folly imported in 1910 Juniperus foetidissima, Juniperus drupacea, Cupressus arizonica, Pinus coulteri, Sequioa sempervirens, Pinus pinea, Cedrus atlantica etc to Hungary to Lake Balaton. He had a mild climate, saved from northwind, on southern downhill seemed to be pleasant for exotas. They survived with smaller or greater problems. Later on others - like me, too - planted this conifers to more worse circumstances, and 70 years after they arrived, they are still alive in -30 Celsius and droughts.

20 years ago Orlóci, László went to the Adrian see in Croatia. He collected tenthousands of Thachycarpus palms. He made an opened seedbed, and he got 3-4 survivors. This palms are now 5 meter high, living in free and resistent for frosts.

There are very big chance for climate selectioning along the Rockies. In the last millions of years conifers were going sometimes north, if warm periods, sometimes to the south, if cold periods. That's why Middle America is full of pines and other pinaceae. They must remember anyway the earlier millions in their genetics. I think, if you make a seedbed of millions seeds - teoretically of course, - anyone could select guatemalan pines back to the north, if the seeds are really remembering with their genes.

I know of course, this game is too expensive, or keeps longer as the man's life. But, hope dies last.
Till that time its much cheaper to take Pinus culminicola down from 3500 m in Mexico's Mts to the gardens.

    Dax,

    C. cashmeriana should do ok in a pot for you. In the ground, it will be dead by November. Even in zone 8b here, some clones are not hardy. I have raised a superior seedling that we have propagated and I am calling 'Blue Wave'. It is very feathery in appearance, seems resistant to foliar disease and hardy so far. I will post a pic sometime..

    Friends,
let's finish the Cupressus file with Cupressus sempervirens. Most of the shown cultivars are from very dry and vaste areas, and maybe, the past winter photos are not the best way to introduce them. They exist, and gives hope to be hardier as the known cultivar ones.

We, living in the continental Europe are searching for similar continental cypresses, of course, and going to find the most hardier, drought tolerant selections.

If you are interested of maritime or pazific cypresses, please visit to the marvellous site of the Cedar Lodge nursery in New Zealand. Greg Sampson, the son of David and Noeline Sampson leads a magnificent nursery in New Plymouth, and it's full with cypresses, which are only in our minds, who live in continents. As we fight against frosts and droughts, Greg must select conifers, which are proved the salt see winds. Some of his plants are time to time on Larry Stanley's lists.
