Also, can I just cut off the cones before they turn brown and let them brown on their own or will that not work. thanks

maturity matters .... do you 'feel' any seed in what you harvested??? .. were the cones.. in any way ... open on their own ??

Yes, once the cones have started to turn from yellow to orange-brown. Probably early to mid September, but perhaps as late as late September (the ideal date will vary with location and weather).

Nope; they are larger and only have vestigial wings.

If I'm not mistaken, seeds of T. occidentalis require no stratification, ie. are ready to germinate just as is. They sprout around my place all the time-an extremely easy tree to propagate from seed. And yes, those are them!
