Yes, with that branching habit it would be A. heterophylla - which has been called star pine in California.

A tall tree, growing fast - and perhaps already out of scale with the building.

Some of us like tall trees near our houses, I picked my house just for the tall pines towering above it, it's a very subjective thing don't you think? I detest the little contrived plantings of trees framing the view, much too "dollhouse" for me. Then there's the giant Mcmansions just stuck out there with no relation to the landscape with again, the little trees dotted about. I like the feeling of living in the forest and the shelter it provides.

You have a grove effect which is not the same as one or a few large accent point specimens - and yours are not right on top of your house, as overgrown foundation plants.

Hi fairfield, that's what our parks look like here except our trees are oaks. Looks exactly the same. No foliage to be seen but way up. Killer plot you have there.

Thanks Dax, not really any visual effect from the pines but nice dappled shade which is always welcome. The bonus is we get a view of the lake down hill from every window. This was winter so you can't see all the bald cypress that my neighbors all have on their lake shore. This is from the house.

Sweet, neat neighborhood. Bald cypress, that's cool. It's nice your neighbor had the knack to think ahead when choosing trees that are deciduous to keep the lake view.

Plus, I love, love, love properties with canopies way up in the sky. When my camera is returned to me from being repaired I'll show you this lady's house two houses down from me. It's really cool. Her oaks are a couple hundred years old.

Actually no one chose the trees, I'm pretty sure most were already here including the cypress along the lake shore. It's all pines with a few oaks of some kind. All second growth I guess.
