Just wanted to let you all know that University of Idaho Pitkin Forest Nursery will have about 140 seedlings of Cupressus (soon to be Hesperocyparis) guadalupensis available this fall beginning in September. Seedlings are 2 dollars each and must be purchased in bundles of five.

The seed source from these trees is from a domestic US grove of 3 Cupressus guadalupensis trees that are from the Island. Seeds could technically be hybrids, but any other Cupressus that are near the guadalupensis grove are about three hundred yards away (they include a C. forbesii and C. butanoensis, which are both also very cool species).

As seedlings are in limited supply, please only purchase seedlings if you are in an area where they stand a chance of surviving. Please do not buy them just to "try them out" if you live in an area where they unlikely to thrive. This species will do well in coastal california but is also very drought tolerant and should do well in inland. Not sure on the hardiness ratings, but this species is unlikely to do well in areas with prolonged frost. I'm sure REsin could give further info on this (any guadalupensis in the UK?).

Also available from Pitkin forest nursery this fall are more Cupressus forbesii and plenty of Cupressus bakeri, as well as a few pure American Chestnut. All seedlings are again 2 dollars and must be purchased in bundles of five. Seed source for the bakeri is Timbered Crater, very frost hardy area. A seedling I planted in the midwest last year survived the winter in an area sheltered from wind.
