Bet someone got a hedge trimmer for their birthday. LOL! The shrubs against the house appear to have gotten a treatment too.

Come on, that looks ridiculous. Who would trim a tree like that?

It would have made more sense to cut out the lawn to accommodate the spruce, rather than cut the spruce to fit the lawn.
A lot of people have a hard time giving up even a small part of their lawn. To them, it's like giving up some of their property. Usually you see it with sheared foundation shrubs in a too narrow bed.

i like the hedge trimmer theory .... cant just let it sit in the garage ... may as well make a hedge out of a 25 foot spruce ... [i am trying to picture one of the monty python guys.. dressed as an old lady with the purse and all ... balancing on top of a common 8 foot ladder ... waiving a gas powered hedge trimmer .. maniacally around... lol]

Exactly. Instead of cutting branches off my Sugar maple, I just turned the shaded area into a mulch area. Below pic w/the S maple in the background w/black cherry in front. The mulch even traps the fallen leaves there instead of being blown away by the wind:

At least the two sheared spruce have branches coming all the way to the ground, as they should. It is much more usual to limb everything up, including young conical conifers (and hollies) such so that they then look as though floating above the ground instead of anchored and stable.
