 o
Pinus Parviflora Name?

Posted by baxz5oh (My Page) on

I got some scion wood from a friend several years ago and my records show it was what he called Shitogoten. I can't find any information on such a cultivar. Does anyone know this cultivar and can you give me an idea of what to expect from the plant?

Description from an old Kenwith Nursery, UK catalogue :
Pinus parviflora 'Shizukagoten' (correct name ?)
'An upright pine with blue curved leaves. Ideal as a small formal specimen or as a bonsai subject'
Not a lot to go on, perhaps someone else knows a bit more.

Thanks much. I'll make a correct label today.

WAIT with the label, the correct cultivar name is 'Chikuza-goten'...

Thanks, this is a plant I have also obtained, though again, under another butchered name: 'Shizvkagoten'. There is a photo of my specimen in the parviflora gallery.

I'll go with Edwin's name unless I find something more definitive from my source.

Thanks Will. That is one of the best galleries.

I received a plant labeled 'Yuki-gon-en'. My web search for this cultivar brought me here...
Is it possible that it is another mislabeling of the 'Chikuza-goten'?

Sam, this is truly possible.
Show me a pic and I can tell you more...

I was impressed how well this did in the 100+ heat this summer. In Ohio this grows @ 4" with 2" side growth. The needles are held close to the stems and only grow to 1". If any of you have this plant and lots of scion wood to spare let me know.

Well, what do you guys think?
Looks somewhat similar in my opinion.
Photobucket
Pinus parviflora ?
Pinus parviflora ?
Thanks for your valuable opinions.

All I can tell is that it looks simular and that the cultivar name 'Yuki-gon-en' doesn't exist.
gon-en and goten comes close pretty close to eachother...

RE: Pinus Parviflora Name?

Sam: Your needles look to be a little longer. They also seem to have more spacing between them and a bit more twist. They are both attractive plants and the only people that would know the correct nomenclature are on this forum so visitors to my display gardens will have to accept that there might be some discrepancies in the name. Thanks for the pic.
