Just received these from kigi nursery- look good to me- haven't taken the plastic off yet but roots look good. Left to right- Cedrus libani nana, C. deodara snowsprite, P. abies little gem, P. abies pendula. The cedars should do well, the picea are of course an experiment. Like I said I will try anything within limits. These were a ebay auction and I got them at a very good price. Very pleased and it has actually cooled off here- first cool down of fall.

They all look great. I'm also with Dave, I wanted to purchase from them so many times, but the all the negative reviews scared me away. But I've had some good luck when others have had bad and vise-versa when ordering plants from companies I never have before.

Well the price was right and the plants are nice, so be it. I would have been a fool to pass it up. On the Garden Watchdog there are very few negatives and on ebay they have a 98% rating- good enough for me. There's not much about them on here either- were are all the negatives? While on that subject, ever read some of the negs on DG about some vendors? People complain about everything and give bad rating. One person complained about a plant dieing a year later! Another complained about a not receiving COMPLETE growing instructions on a Jap maple. People are stupid. These weren't about Kigi nursery specifically. I'm trying to sell a house and the feedback is hilarious. One lady said the house was haunted because the some lights came on by theselves- these are motion detection lights. Not trying to defend, but you have actually read the negs online. |

Maybe I'll give this company a shot next year, they do have some plants I need. I'm just leary on ordering from anyone with negative reviews. I got burnt by 2 companies that had negative reviews... out some $300+. The stock was worthless junk, after no replies, I tossed everything into my burn pile. But I did read some of the reviews on Dave's garden lol... some guy said he ordered twice, received both shipments, but only wanted one order so he left a negative. lol.

You just never know. When your order is processed you get what they have on hand at that time. Good or bad. Dave

I wondered if anyone here got the Picea pungens 'Monkey Puzzle' he was selling?

Haven't ordered from them, but back when I followed Stanley offerings (no room for big orders anymore)it seemed Kigi usually had a subset of what Stanley had. tj

Just to clarify- I got the newsletter about the incentive program on 9-13 after this post- so it was completely unsolicited.

Bringing this back to your plants and your climate, since the plants are very young they are pretty adaptable. Your 'Nana' should do fine. The 'Snow Sprite' is questionable depending on the grafting material used. Most of the time it will be OK if you put it a location of dappled sun or at least afternoon shade. Of the three cousins, 'Silver Mist' and 'Cream Puff' take far more direct sun without sunburning than 'Snow Sprite'. My experiance with Picea abies, and I've done both of your specimens multiple times, is they really struggle in our long hot humid summers. By the time you get to zones 7 and 8, the length of our hot seasons and the extended time our soil temps stay pretty high, is very hard on most popular conifers. If you can locate these where they are in decent shade most all of the day you will have a pretty good chance of survival. But I'd say if they get more than an hour or two of full sun in a zone 8, they will eventually crater. mark

Thanks Mark, As I said the picea are an experiment- they are are in shade. The whole yard is under mature pine trees-so they will get dappled shade but it is not dark shade. There may be an hour of direct sun. Hopefully a good mulch will help too. Curious about the 'Snow Sprite'- I assumed they are usually on deodara- I was more worried about the nana. Deodara does well here whenever someone actually plants it. What else would it be grafted on? And yes the soil temps are the killer- and the high night temps too. It just never cools off. I wish there were a spruce that could take soil temps like A. Firma does. At the old house I had one that was about 15-20ft tall and was bulletproof- completely underwater many times and never blinked. Not the best looking fir though. |

Hi Everyone, I decided to create a conifer forest this year under a grove of some gigantic and beautiful Canary Island Pines (they have drooping candelabra arranged branches with extremely long powder blue needles). I was searching on Ebay and discovered kigi. I never ordered from them before (my rule of thumb usually is only make a small order your first time with a new seller) but the selection was so outstanding and the prices so amazing I couldn't resist! I ended up ordering 16 trees! They arrived very safely packed with plenty of moisture in plastic bags. All species that needed them had pole supports. They were not bare root, just unpotted which I appreciated. I was also very pleased with the condition of these trees, they weren't sickly half yellow rejects but robust healthy saplings many of which were larger than I expected. I'm currently planning a new order, I can't imagine finding another nursery with these particular species varieties at these prices. I highly recommend them and will post a review of my second order when it arrives. Whaas asked about the Picea pungens "Monkey Puzzle", I have one from kigi. It does resemble my young true Monkey Puzzle except the very short needles are deep blue instead of green and are soft instead of stiff. The way the branches emerge from the trunk in horizontal architectual short-spined arms is very reminiscent of Araucaria and that blue color in the sunlight really knocks your socks off. It is one of my most unusual trees. There is almost zero info about it on the Web, I should ask them about it next time I email. Maybe someone here knows more. Happy growing!
