Why are my Coast Redwood leaves turning red?

Why are my Coast Redwood (sequoia sempervirens) leaves turning red or bronze or redish brown near the stem? You can see the edges of the leaf are green. The tree is just a couple of years old and is growing inside. The stem of the tree is starting to turn "wood-like" with a thin layer of bark, which is normal. However, the color of the leafs is starting to worry me. The temperature is around 70F, so the tree is not too hot and not too cold. It is under a high powered fluorescent light 16 hours a day (on a timer).
