Semidesert conifers 5 After a rainy season...

Surprisingly this year our nice semidesert has got over 1000 mm rain till end of August. What do they? Growing like fools... and enjoy life. Also other rare conifers do this.

Arizonica Arboretum is in dry z6. Cupressus sempervirens 'Serbica' (not Sibirica!) was found in Serbia, southern Europe. HTJ selects cupressus from old plants living 30-40 years in Hungary z6, or from Toros Mts. TUR from high mountains.
If anybody takes seeds from here, and selects for z5 or lower, we will know (in 50 years or so)the new borders.

Practically we dont know yet what are able to resist tropical genuses, just after bringing out them to lower zones.

First you can make seedbeds of Floridan podocarpaceae in Carolina, 20 years later in Georgia, Virginia, and you can go on as nature allows it. Its a good game, but also a long one. Maybe, your grandson will plant podocarpaceae in Wyoming or Alaska. You need only a good selecting idea, and time enough.

My friend has collected 20 years ago more ten thousands of Trachycarpus seed in Croatia. He made an open seedbed, and survived 3-4. These are now 5 meter tall palms in z6, and 70 % of their seeds are also good for z6.

Experience and experience again.

Abies lowiana foliage
Zsolt, the plant showed under the nama "Abies lowiana" are abies concolor. Abies lowiana look more Abies grandis.

The variegated Calocedrus at your photo isn't the cultivar 'Berrima Gold', but is 'Aureovariegata'.
This is the 'Berrima Gold'.

In my opinion you can give a cultivar name to every columnar Cupressus sempervirens seedling, but if you mixed these up I think you can't seperate them from eachother...

Clément, I always thougt that it was Abies concolor var. lowiana.
This one looks between Abies concolor and Abies grandis.
Does it live between these species areas in the wild?

Cedrus brevifolia 'Bodrog' was made of seed of the Turkish Forest Service, dont know which elevation comes from.

maybe you are right, but I dont know exactly. This one stands in semishadow, and I didnt start debate with the owner. But yours looks very good.
