I had one in the most protected spot, literally a little cove.
Little bugger declined after 4 years.

I have a Spirited and Melody in better soil but more exposed locations. That will be my last shot.

I don't get this species either....they must be a borderline zone 5 plant...ie lower Midwest.

Humidity is no problem for this species. It does great in the southeast and even does well in northern Florida where I am. I would suspect winter injury is the issue.

Native to Japan, where it is plenty damp in summer. However, garden variants such as yellow foliage forms and fixed juveniles are often going to be more delicate than normal wild type seedlings. Am also seeing some browning out of these here, were summers are cooler than in most of the country, so there is probably one or more pathenogenic issues occurring. And people have been having problems with discoloration and death of planted Nootka cypresses also.

I agree with salicaceae. I have several with varying degrees of success. One lived 7 years and was killed last winter, 4-5 others I've had since '99 and are fine and still others have occasional browning after some winters. Amount of winter exposure seems to be a slight factor but then, the one that died this past winter was the most protected. Go figure.
