Great purchase! It's Platycladus orientalis 'Franky Boy'. It grows 3-6 inches a year and is hardy to -20 degrees zone 5.

It will turn an orangey bronze in the winter and then back to a nice lemon lime green in the spring. If it gets a little scraggly looking over the years it can be sheared a little for a tighter look or just let it do it's thing.

For me the Platycladus orientalis have been quite bulletproof and have required no care. They even seem to do well in crappy clay soil. Just plant it in a good sunny location with good drainage and enjoy =)

one thing for sure... just looking at the plant.. it grew MORE THAN 3 to 6 inches ...

just track back this season green growth.. to where the bark changes color or texture ... and each year back in time.. the bark changes again ... so you can puzzle out.. how much it grew in its lifetime ....

this is common in hyper-fertilized pots forced to size for the market ... and many times.. the plants revert to proper annual growth.. once they get established in the soil ...

if you know the annual growth rate.. then you can use multiplication.. and figure out how big.. in how many years ... to site it properly ....

and do note .. thats a big plant.. in a small pot.. root surgery may be in its future ... but thats a new post.. with a new title ... if you need info in that regard ...

If you look under Google for this plant, they have a pic with them pruned with fluffy heads, that is what I would do. LOL
