are the trees in your area changing color ...

if so... its time to move them ... most things are dormant above ...

they are evergreen.. but they are not conifers... but the rules are no different ...

we want to move things in dormancy ... when the roots have time to get re-established... before the leaves start demanding copious amounts of water ... at least 6 to 8 weeks before the heat of next summer ... so even if you dont get it done soon.. anytime prior to next april should be fine ....

dig new hole.. dig slightly outside what was planted in spring.. move plant.. back fill with native soil .. water deeply and properly ...

and try not to let hem dry out over winter.. w/o letting them stay too dry ...

maybe the rules are different for z7 ... so if anyone with specific experience chimes in.. i will defer .... on the precise timing ....

shouldnt hurt to review the primer at the link ... noting soil types and watering.. and mulch ...

I think it's fine time in Southern NY. In my particular region of z7 (Georgia), the trees are in colour at the moment, and things are going dormant. Full colour in this area is usually the first weekend of November. Things heat up again by about mid to late March, and by late March, you have no frost issues to worry about. I've actually been potting some boxwood seedlings that have wandered far and wide (as well as some holly and maple) this week, which is about the average time for me. Probably a good time this week through until March to transplant. Just remember, the colder it gets, the harder the ground is to dig into, so get it done before too late into Autumn, or you're just creating more work for yourself.

i would imagine its hard to water properly with soil that cant be dug ... so dont leave it until the last minute ...

they cant get totally dry during winter ....
