Hi Alexander,

1 = Juniperus oxycedrus. The cones are too small, and the leaves too slender, for J. macrocarpa. Also the cones are too smooth for J. deltoides (which replaces J. oxycedrus in the eastern Med., and has pronounced bumps on the apex of the 3 main scales).

2 = Pinus pinaster. A very nice large specimen (I'd like it please!!!). Probably still unopened and filled with seeds, which increases the weight.

3 = Cupressus sempervirens; not fully mature when picked (so the seeds probably won't grow). When mature, the cones open more evenly, and the seeds are dark brown, not pale reddish like this.

4 = Juniperus phoenicea, as you guessed. The orange-red cones are characteristic (J. thurifera, also native in S France, has purple cones).

If the cones are hard and dry, I suspect the seeds won't be viable. J. oxycedrus cones should be reasonably soft and easy to pull apart.

They're recorded up to 22 cm long, though the longest I've ever seen myself is about 18 or 19 cm.

So the third one is P. pinaster after all (I didn't expect it to be so).
I saw on different websites that the width when closed is 4-6cm, so I presume this one is breaking records? :p

Probably not breaking records, but maybe not too far off it. Not many people measure cones, and when they do, they often only measure a few of each species, instead of the 100 or more needed for statistical validity.
