I did a small area of 12V. lighting. High maintenance to keep functioning and now that all the bulbs are made in China their life span is very short.

I only now have 3 large junipers with well lighting that are up limbed with light shining up through the branches at night.

Ken the transformers are more expensive then the wire and to do 5 acres highly expensive.

Don't light everything, or else it just gets bland. Only highlight the real highlights. Look into flag lighting.

There's some cool solar uplighting options available now that may work for you Ken. I've bought a couple different kinds from Gardener's Supply Company(gardeners.com) that work pretty well with sufficient sunlight and have held up going on three years now.

My Ogon is close enough to the home my floodlights illuminate it whenever there is any motion. It looks pretty darned cool at night.

I wonder what fire code is in your area. For Christmas I just drag an extension cord around and plop this inflatable polar bear down in the yard. In years past I had some sorts of stake in in the ground flood light. Guess you could trench wire (according to code) to the light and things would work. My neighbor used his poor mower to create a shallow trench for his dog shock collar wiring and that seems to work for years at a time.

I put solar around a portion of my property and since I have no beds but sole plantings, they were always in the way of my mower and required extra work whether herbicides or hand weeding & a string trimmer just destroys them. One summer was enough for me. Plus, like Jon said, it kind of looked like a landing area for airplanes.

I can see a place like Dave's when done correctly. Not on acres and acres though. Or, just a few, once again, as Jon pointed out. What I did like and do like are lights along sidewalks and pathways. And for you Ken, the occasional light up around your patio area. I've found that more expensive solar last as long as the cheapest. And they all have bad attitudes.
