alley_cat, I'm thinking it is too low. The wound / healing looks very fresh as well and, if it was from deer, it would not be as fresh a wound. Unless it was this year ???

Callus thickness indicates it has been healing for a while. Probably around one growing season

It is about mid-thigh high, it could be from last year then John.

I used to get sunscald on a Kwanzan Cherry that eventually died from getting it continuously. I understand this is a problem on young trees and fruit trees with thin bark. It is not a young tree and I have had it in the same place for at least 6 years.

Starting to agree the most likely cause is deer. Sure have enough of those around here.

but .... it was like a bruise.. under the bark/skin ...

you werent aware of it.. until the bark failed.. dried.. and cracked ...

its like when i see.. for the first time.. winter sun scald.. in august ...

just a theory.. no science behind it ...

ps: that.. or whoever put a 90 degree twist in the tree ... caused some internal damage.. that the plant is just now showing ....

pps: next time... start small ..... and train your own weirdo .... i cant imagine.. how you transported... moved.. and planted this beast.. though i seem to think i have some vague recollection of your miseries ....

It was easily movable when I bought it. I did lift it up and put in the crutch a few years ago. The wound might be a long-delayed reaction to this.

I think the misery you might remember would be-
