Four years of Pinus thunbergii 'Thunderhead'

Syn. Pinus thunbergiana, depends on who you ask. This is a wonderful dwarf Japanese black pine noted for the strongly colored white Winter candles that form and contrast with the dark green foliage. Most specimens seem to grow about 1/2 or 3/4's rate of the species, so it's less of a dwarf and more of an intermediate sized tree. 30 year sizes are probably something like 15-20' wide, 12 feet high or if it's more upright like my specimen, maybe 20' high, 8 feet wide.

Bought in the Summer of 2010. Probably five-six years old here.

2011 - Early Spring candles opening.

2011 - Candles turned into full needles.

2012

2013

Funky candle growth.
