| Well, I'm on my 3rd year and moving into winter w/ my Pinus Wallichiana 'Zebrina' in Zone 5. I have a crazy urban heat effect in my backyard and so have a pretty solid Zone 6 happening - whoohoo!!! Here she is Winter of 2005-2006 and then just today. She's grown a lot!!!
Look at the little pinecones!
And now:

I love it, it's my favorite. If it dies, I'll buy another one and plant it again over and over until I die. I'm committed (or should be LOL). ken, I'll just keep emailing you photos every year and you can live vicariously. That's the story of MY life when it comes to your hosta collection. ;)

This may be a dumb question but I'm ok with that. LOL Why are the cones dripping w/ sap?

Hi Ademink, No-one really knows the answer, even though most cones do so. Anti-squirrel defence is one possible reason, another is to keep off insects. Resin

How long will the cones be cones before they dry and drop seeds? Or don't they do that? And what would the seeds be - parent reversions or something? Coniferously uneducated, Andrea

The cones will turn yellow-brown and open to shed their seeds very soon now. After opening, they'll hang on the tree for a few more months before falling off. Resin

Very cool, although I'll miss having them on the tree - they look really neat. So should I save the seeds and try to grow them? Will they grow little zebrinas or will they just be generic who-knows-what seedlings? Does this tree "self-pollinate" or how does that work?

Any seedlings will most likely come up hybrids with Pinus strobus (assuming this is common in the area). The two species hybridise freely (the hybrid is known as Pinus x schwerinii). The seedlings are unlikely to be anything other than plain green. Resin

Resin, wonder if "Zebrina" has any Pinus strobus in it? The way the needles droop & the cones seem like pure P. Wallichiana. ademink, the pale color of the needles is beautiful w/a dark background. Seems like the one cone got stuck to a stem somehow. Some large P. Wallichianas in the National Arb are stunning w/pale, silvery-green, drooping needles. I'm growing three of these from a Bhutan seed-source & they don't seem bothered by the cold here so far.

I'm in love w/ the tree and yes, I think that one cone did get stuck to something...it's an oddball. If the seedlings have any traits of this wonderful tree in it, I'd gladly keep them in the yard! I'll probably try to grow some and see what happens. Even if they're all green, maybe the needles will be long and soft and droopy on one. Hugging my tree. LOL
