Autumn color Photo Gallery 2010

Autumn is right around the corner for most of us(or already here), and while most conifers aren't neccesarily more distinct in autumn, some begin to color early. Since Japanese maples seem to fit in well next to conifers I'll share some of both over the next month.

Please feel free to add any Autumn photos you'd like(landscape/garden/natural/etc).

A new planting(2nd year) of Virginia creeper set as a backdrop behind several conifers and heather. I plan on making the Virginia creeper into an espalier along the rockwall, trimming it back regularly as neccesary.

Acer japonicum 'Ed Woods #2'. Japonicums, the best fall color.

Acer shirasawanum 'sport' next to Abies koreana 'Cis'

More shots on the way as Autumn gets going - post any shots you'd like to show.

-Will

I bought a Crataegus x persimilis 'Prunifolia Splendens' this summer gone, with 3 inch glossy black thorns and stunning fall colours. It's seems to have dropped some leaves quite quickly but I'll try to get a picture asap.

    Post any photos you like.

Some of my trees are well ahead of the others. Here's a good example of one tree brilliantly ahead of the others.

Acer palmatum 'Koto Ito Komache'. It's worth mentioning that this tree was moved from a full-sun location in the front yard.

Another 'early turner', Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph'. In my climate, it begins turning a nice gold by October and holds that color until mid-Spring.

Fall seems to have arrived a little late this year. This Enkianthus is also usually a brighter red
    {{gwi:829931}}

I like the way the Rhododendron PJM turns color in the Fall. The Dawn Redwood, 'Ogon' has yet to change color.

rispetto, what are the small red and purple bushes(?) in your second and third photos? They make a neat color contrast.

botann, neither of my metasequoias have changed from green or yellow much at all. I'll try to post when they do. I bet your zone 8 change is later than my zone 6

    Metasequioa glyptostroboides:

It's amazing how fast these ones grow. I sowed this tree in spring 2007. Now it's almost 2,50 meters (8 feet) high. Last years' growth was about one meter!
Nice tree, only in winter it looks ugly (imo).....

Nice looking gardens in these Autumn colors!

Maria, watch that Larix kaempferi 'Little Bogle' carefully.
It will overgrow the others in now time!
It's not that little as the name suggest...

Mirek, which big one in your garden is transformed into a giant garden bonsai?

Crypper, you create a nice mix of plants in your garden.
The 'Goldilocks'/'Dr. Landis (gold)' and the 'Chief Joseph' are real eye catchers!

Dave, it's about time you posted more photos from your garden. I know we have similar tastes and now I seen indeed you have a fantastic setting. Your maples are wonderful and your conifers are cruising along. It almost looks like you bought your 'Goldilocks' from the nursery I am working with. Gig Harbor maybe? Good to see the photos - let's see some more.

Hi Maria, I never came across this 'Curvis Moerchant' but when I searched with Google I saw that my friend Jörg Kohout does have this one for sale but it's discription is the same as 'Little Bogle'.
I wouldn't be surprised if these are the same one...

  • coniferjoy

Maria, it's a pitty that you can't show us photo's of both the Larix cultivars yet, but can you tell us if you can see some differences?

I think that your problem with Google is now that you used your monthly free space of photo's completely, you'll get new space every 3th day of the next month which is comming Tuesday ;0)

Edwin, in my opinion Larix kaempferi 'Little Bogle' is not so curly as 'Curvis Moerchant' and has more irregular type of growth. I will try again to post photos. Thanks for advice.

Great shots here. Love the natural photos, which for most provide the initial desire to go out and get some Autumn color for their own piece of land.

Colors seem to be peaking here, though a wind storm recently knocked off most of the older leaves.

Kleckas, nice Larix in Autumn pics!
Your 'Cruwys Morchard' must be written as
'Curvis Moerchant' and is in my opion still the same as 'Little Bogle'...

Will, fantastic assortment, were will you find some space left to plant the one's which are still in a pot?
When are you going to start at your neighbour's garden you mentioned about a while ago?

Tommy Tsuga, you showed us also some nice colored pics.
Your Picea mariana 'Echiniformis is a Picea mariana 'Nana'.

    >Your 'Cruwys Morchard' must be written as
    >'Curvis Moerchant' and is in my opion still the same

    Since when?

By the way, 'Little Bogle' is usually listed as L. decidua cultivar.

Thanks, all. I think I'm getting a feel for this digital thing. After 25yrs of shooting with the control of a Nikon FM2 its a bit hard to adjust.

Edwin, that P. mariana pic may be deceiving as it was taken with a macro setting. It only stands about 3 1/2 inches tall (9-10cm) and grows less than 1 cm per year. I thought 'Nana' had a faster growth rate.

    Kleckas,
Maria's photo in this same topic made me surch for this 'Curvis Moerchant' because I wasn't familiar with this cultivar before.
A little investigation brought my to my German friend Jörg Kohout and he mentioned this cultivar written this way at his website (see link).
As he is a very good plantsman he's very trustful when it come's to conifer names.
The name curvis (like curved) make more sence because the branches are twisted.

Indeed, 'Little Bogle' is listed as a Larix decidua cultivar but it is certainly not, it's wood is as red as a crawfish which is a characteristic of Larix kaempferi.

The thing is that a lot of people believes all what is written on a tag or what is written in a book.
It's very important to watch the plant by it's characteristics and then make a conclusion what it realy is...

    Tommy Tsuga,
Your plant is what we discussed a little while ago and is at a lot of places sold as Picea glauca 'Echiniformis' which it isn't and it seems that this cultivar isn't availlable in the U.S. at all.
This plant is Picea mariana 'Nana', Picea mariana 'Echiniformis' doesn't exist.
Maybe the explanation for your less growing rate is the place were your plant is standing in your garden, the Pinus flexilis (?) at the right next to it didn't grow that well either.
But maybe I'm wrong in this case and if that is so I want to say sorry to you.

Here is a link that might be useful: Larix kaempferi 'Curvis Moerchant'

Edwin, don't worry about it. Those plants are in a trough
and that certainly could have an effect on them. Although,
the so-called glauca 'Echiniformis' I see around here does
have a similar slow growth rate to mine and the mariana
'Nana' around here does grow faster. Or...maybe the mariana
'Nana' (Blue Nest Spruce) are labeled wrong as well ;-)
