I am the last person to take one of these quizzes, but I will have a shot at this one without looking in any of my books.

RE: Cone quiz!

Resin, you never fail!

Ken, you win my appreciation for making me laugh . . . !

Here's a couple clues:

1) They're both native to the Eastern US.

2) I forgot size reference for Cone #1 with the large prickles. It is only a half inch longer than cone #2.

RE: Cone quiz!

This pic should make identifying the Pinus species to which the cones belong much easier!!!!

Seed on the left is from a cone of species #1....seed on right is species #2

First is Table mountain pine -- the recurved claws are a giveaway.

Second one, not so sure, but the closed cone looks a little pineapple-like w/o real claws, so I'd guess Pitch pine.

Thank you Resin for posting in my absence. Yes, Beng has them correct!

I don't know how much national news coverage it's been recieving, but Western New York was hit with a nasty little storm this weekend. We got over a foot and a half of wet sloppy snow, breaking the tops off of ALL the trees that hadn't yet lost their leaves. It is really disheartening to drive around (now that the driving bans have been lifted) and see all your favorite specimen trees devastated. Thankfully, at least for me, the majority of the trees I've planted over the years are still under 10feet tall and unaffected. Unfortunately, most of the mature trees on my property were silver maples. . . I will never run out of firewood again! I'll post pictures when I get a chance (later this week?). The power has been out in my house since 1:00 am Friday morning and just came back on an hour ago.
