Pinus strobus 'Stonybrook'

I have to question one of my plants I recently ordered... as I'm trying to find a place for it. Everywhere I read online, this plant should be a weeper or if unstaked it should crawl on the ground. It should also have light gray contorted branches. All the pictures I'm finding also support this.

It has never been staked and appears to be 2-3 years old.

I question this because I have 2 other Pinus strobus weepers and they won't produce a leader like that unless staked. Plus this plant doesn't have the light gray branches.

I wonder if it is just strobus. It could of been understock growing through the stock plant and mistakenly cut as scion wood. Thats why it takes a trained eye to collect scions. Just one possibility. Wouldnt be the first time.

That would suck if it's an ordinary Pinus strobus. I wouldn't mind if it was another named conifer, but an ordinary Pinus stobus would probably end up in my compost bin.

Send them pics. Im sure they will compare the plant to their other containers. If it looks way off I would guess they will offer a replacement. And its possible its the right plant, just growing vigorously. But I would have my doubts that is the scenario..

Mine was nibbled to a few buds this year. Like yours mine had that waviness to the side branches. Mine came from Bethlehem Nursery and from what I can see of your plant Rick, it looks the same as mine. Mine also went up, but, I never expected it to stay that way.

Dax - Mine came from a different supplier... but that's good to know that our plants resemble the same characteristics. For that reason, I'll ID it as Stonybrook unless someone tells me otherwise. I did google 1 gallon regular Pinus strobus and they do look almost identical.

Either a lot of scion wood is going around for this plant as an ordinary Pinus strobus as mentioned above OR we have 2 different conifers under the same name. Our plants being the misidentified ones. Maybe it'll develop some unique characteristics as it ages. Right now it just resembles an ordinary pine which is a little bit disappointing since I ordered it hoping it would have the light gray twisted branches.

No problem, Rick. I still think yours is labeled correct. If I were to dig thru my strobus understock seedlings, not many would look like that.
