I got this from Don Howse in the spring of 2011 and it has done well this year. I've been training the central leader up in the spring and then removing the support by mid July. It's pretty rigid and has no problem standing on it's own. I need to remove the old support I used to correct a curve/lean in the trunk. I'm hoping to keep this upward training going as long as I can safely reach the top, from a ladder if need be.
I'm curious if anyone has trained 'Stony Brook' vertical (10'+)? The pictures I saw online show it to 4-5' and then it looks like they snipped the leader. There seems to be some "wild arms" forming similar to a Cham. nootka. but I don't know if they will continue to meander outwards or droop and grow downward under the weight of new growth.
