Abies grandis broom

Hey Everyone-

So, last summer I found this broom in Idaho by the Clearwater River. When I went back for scions last week (since you have to wade the river to get to it, a winter collection trip is out) I noted that there was a similar but smaller broom a few hundred yards away.

It isn't the rust that I normally see in this species further north, and the twigs didn't really look misshapen like they would in an Arceuthobium infection.

I grafted it up anyway, but it seems pretty dubious to me after having seen the other broom. Does anyone have any idea of what might be causing this?

Here is a link that might be useful: Potty Mount Plant Hunter
