I'd give a rough guess that 6 hrs full sun is a minimum for pitch pine to be healthy and dense -- similar to my Table Mnt pine. But guessing it would survive OK, but be leggy/sparse on 4-5 hrs.

john ... i swear i addressed this on one of your other posts ...

not much will die in less than prime light ... just for that reason [in shade.. the shade producing trees might out compete the newbie for water and other issues]

but performance.. or vigor can be an issue ...

it really doesnt matter what plant.. tree.. conifer.. perennial.. annual.. you want to talk about ...

you just plant it.. and find out ...

besides.. if i recall.. you will have a lot more sun.. when the EAB gets all those ash ... IF.. and thats a big IF... i recall properly ....

I just planted a bunch of pitch pine in full sun. A lot of newly planted ones seemed to die in full sun in the summer drought. While they don't recommend them for conifers, I find the ones I put in tree tubes had a somewhat higher survival rate the first summer. (I imagine you would have to remove the tubes while the trees are still young to get a normal pine tree shape.)

Ken - You did address this in a different post, but it was about a different type of conifer, and most websites describe pitch pine as "shade intolerant". So I thought maybe pitch pine was very sensitive in this way.

I don't mind slower, natural looking growth.
