Hello Resin,
Last I remember reading before my wife gave birth they were blaming inbreeding depression on the lack of viable seedlings in cultivation. Supposedly there was another materials gathering expedition to solve this.
After watching a couple of mine grow for a decade I would be more worried about an early spring cold snap than absolute minimum temperature as a culprit if there is one.
If I get on a pc later I might have a link or two to post.

Asheville, NC and Atlanta,GA - I have seen many seedlings self sown in these two spots. Asheville can get quite cold.

toronado, my DR does come out very early. I'd assume their cones in general also come out early. But mine is little affected by late frosts, at least the foliage -- similar to larch in that respect.

I have seen Bald cypresses produce initial cones in mid March (way before the leaves emerge & the last frost), but produce plenty of viable seeds.

Anyone seen anything in New England, or the midwest? Metasequoia grows well there, but does it seed there?

I'm pretty sure they are growing it from seed at Hidden Lake.

After more than 20 years, my Metasequoias appear to produce some self-sown seedlings here and there in the garden for the first time. Last winter was normal with some days below -20C, and the this spring was cool and late. I wonder what triggered this outcome.

The seed I just germinated came from Hidden Lake Garden's specimen, in zone 5 michigan.
