This one is on Canaan fir, unfortunately.
Because its own roots should be adequate for this area, I might try to air layer it this winter, or I should say this fiscal year! The bonsai people claim firs can be air layered, just that it might be incredibly slow. I want to use the one spare Abies firma rootstock I have for something else.

Yes, it looks similar to me. Do you have enough species there that you can compare the needle tips? Your seem more visibly 2-pointed, but not as much as a for example a A. firma would appear. Do you have any pure A. nebrodensis?

Sadly the plant died. It was a rare case of outright neglect on my part, I think I never could get 'attached' to it, because 1) I wasn't sure what it really was and 2) it didn't grow with much vigor - certainly no evidence of hybrid vigor! making me wonder if it wasn't growing well because 3) it was grafted onto something inappropriate for my area, A. balsamea, and was sulking. Once it started looking ratty enough I put it in the 'do no resuscitate' pile of potted plants LOL. Which is odd because it retrospect it had been pretty expensive. Was not happy with the way it had been packed, either, and never ordered from them again. I think it lasted 3 years but never grew very much. I tried to air layer it twice, to no avail.

Hi, David. Sorry about your fir. But in reading this thread I was struck by your statement that firs possibly could be air layered. Have you or anyone else reading this been successful in doing so?

I have never been successful with air layering a conifer...granted my various attempts at grafting, rooting, and layering many types of plants have had a pathetic success ratio over the years! But I'm sure I read somewhere - maybe a bonsai website - that some firs could be air layered, if you're patient. Like, taking one or two years patience.

I have dug up already natural layers of my Cryptomeria 'Elegans' and grown them on. Easy.
