Looks like a fairly good visual alternative to Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) - It has that same sweeping, informal character. How hardy is it?

Very nice tree; perhaps most like a broad-crowned Picea omorika, with similar green / white contrast in the needles. Nice purple cones, though not very prolific coning.

Mostly zone 7-9. The northernmost origins might be a bit hardier. Needs high humidity / rainfall; very sensitive to drought.

Hmmm, I don't think I could get away with growing that. We are subject to the occasional drought (we've had dry summers the past 3 years), and we USUALLY hit -17 F at least once in the winter. We are solidly zone 5; the problem around here is that those cold snaps often come when there's no snow cover - Much more devastating than -30 with 2 feet of snow on the ground.
