Canker or ?

The tree had not flushed out this spring and I noticed this hard dried resin at the base of the trunk. Today, I dug it up and upon close inspection, I could not detect any evidence of tiny insects nor their burrowing, what one sees in the second photo as possible tunnels is likely the now enlarged capillaries where the sap had flowed. Today, I then noticed the very same darn resin collection at the base of my treasured picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns' and imagine it's a goner also.
