Which cultivars are worth multiples?

For all you cultivar enthusiasts out there, I was curious, which cultivars do you need more than one of? To ask another way. Which cultivar do you like so much, if you find a nice one, you can't pass it up? The first two that come to mind for me are Pinus contorta 'Taylor's Sunburst' and Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph'.

Pinus thunbergii 'Thunderhead' and Pinus heldreichii 'Smidt' are also on the list. I have multiples of other cultivars as well, but these are the ones I feel are definately worth more than one specimen. I was just curious what other cultivars people were really passionate about, so that if I've overlooked them , I might give them a second look. Dan

If abundance figures are anything to go by, most people want several 'Haggerston Grey' Leyland Cypresses . . . methinks they're all mad :-)

Well, I got two tiny Abies nordmaniana 'Golden Spreader', but its more a case of being concerned that one of them will not survive. Otherwise I usually tend to get just one of each, due to my limited space and sometimes also the high cost.
For next spring my order list includes four Juniperus chinensis 'Plumosa Aurea' and a couple of Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns'.
Thanks for the nice photos Dan !

hoopsi and candicans for the vivid electric blue.. throw in thomsen also ....

agreed on the chief .. wates golden .... resinosa aurea .. mugo winter gold ... for the winter schoolbus yellow ...

de groots spire is just awesome for 8 feet and one foot across ...

the pendulous larix .. decidua and/or kaempferi ... and since they are mixed up in the trade.. whichever is just fine ...

the yellow variegated Thuja occidentalis .. like sunkist.. yellow ribbons.. george washington ....

and finally ... though ridiculously common ..... Thuja orientalis 'Berckman Gold' ... its just so three dimensional in its color presentation ... shifting color as you swipe your hand across it ....

i will think of more later ... ken

Although relatively common, I had to add another Picea abies 'Acrocona' this year. The two older ones in my yard coned quite heavily this year which made me love them even more. My other current favorite is Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret', but I think I am going to give it another winter to see how it does. Last winter was not much of a test.

I greatly expanded my conifer collection this year so I'll see if any of those warrant a companion in the coming years. The newbies include
    Taxodium distichum 'Cascade Falls'
    Abies concolor 'Kinky'
    Abies concolor 'Gable's Weeping'
    Pinus Strobus 'Hillside Winter Gold'
    Pinus Strobus 'Horsford dwarf'(?)
    Pinus Mugo 'Aurea'
    Pinus sylvestris 'Aurea'
    Picea orientalis 'Skylands'
    Pinus koreanis 'Oculus Draconis'
    Pseudolarix amabilis
And two Larix that I am blanking on the names right now.

Some of those names need to be tuned, of course.

I guess it depends on how much real estate you have at your disposal and what your intent is, but there are SO many great conifer cultivars out there I'd be hard pressed to want to duplicate choices before selecting just for individual characteristics. Of course if you are hedging or otherwise needing to replicate the same tree with the same characteristics for some reason, that's a bit different. The single conifer in my collection I'd consider planting another of is Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Wissel's Saguaro' - only because its rather unique and columnar presence seems to cry out for a companion to act as sentries flanking a walkway or other place of demarkation.
