Dying green giant arborvitae

We have 40 of these trees, planted approx 6 feet apart along the property line. They are 4 years old, and until recently, have seemed to thrive and appeared healthy. But over the past 4 months, about half have started to ooze sap from the main trunk at various locations-- and then over the course of a few weeks, have turned orange from the inside out. About a third of the half with the oozing sap have completely died-- the other two thirds are in various stages of decline. The local garden center suggested their insecticide for boring insects, which we have been using according to the package directions for 3-4 months, but without success. Has anyone had a similar experience? We loved these trees and are heart-broken watching them wither and die. Is there anything else we can try to save them?

Sounds rather like cypress canker to me. (But that's a guess based on sketchy details.) That said, although images may help us, likely an on-site Misti by a certified arborist would do more. Check the Yellow Pages, under the heading of Trees or something similar. Then look for companies which either state they have certified arborist(s) or display the small logo for same.

I've posted the picture above, showing the sap (resin?) running down the bark. Has anyone had any success in saving arborvitae infected with cypress canker? Thanks.

If it is cypress canker, no. Can you provide slightly larger images?

Canycane, Send me an e-mail. I am here in FL and would like to get some samples to see if it really is cypress canker. Thanks. Jason
