Conifer spacing and pruning advice from an old conifer friend

Came home from work yesterday and was walking through my garden when I stumbled on to this scene:
It looked to be between 50-60' tall and maybe 30-40 years old. Over the previous 24 hours, my rain gauge showed more then 8"(!) of rain and then that night we had 40-60 mile wind gusts. I am guessing the soil was so saturated(we're at 18" of rain since Nov. 1), that the roots were just unable to hold on.
Here's a pic a week before:
So while inspecting the damage and saying my thanks that it didn't hit the house, I started noticing a very amusing trend. First, there were no total plant losses whatsoever. A few Japanese maples were pruned uhm, how would you say, rather aggressively? But every conifer in it's path went more or untouched. Perhaps this might be a suggestion by an old-timer to plant more dwarf conifers and less Japanese maples? lol... whatever the case, I count myself lucky...

Stunning area even with a toppled tree. :) Glad there was no serious damage though. CH |

| Halloween night a ten year old out trick or treating with friends was victim to a Birch that came down from the wind and it killed the poor kid. |

| 18 inches of rain so far this month! Wow! Yes, it seems likely that soil was saturated. I remember one time a few years ago....we had heavy rain and high winds at a point where the soil was still partially frozen. Many, and I mean many spruce were felled in that event. +oM |

| Another four plus inches of rain in the last 48-hours. Our local FD weather station has recorded over 21" this month - it's just incredible. There hasn't really been a single dry day all month and most days are just drenched with heavy rains for hours on end. I've lived in the PNW for a long time and this is the wettest month I can remember. I'll have to pray the giant doug-firs behind my house hold on tight - a few of them are 100'+ and would go through my house like a knife to warm butter. Tom, no freezing here yet, many of the trees still have leaves - some are even green still as these warm storms bring 50 degree days on a regular basis. Coldest temp my weather station has recorded this fall is 35 degrees. |
