Thought I'd share a picture of Crash my 8 month old Boxer/Boston Terrier mix puppy. He's my new squirrel and rabbit deterrent. Here's a pic of him from today, standing guard over Picea pungens 'Dietz Prostrate', Pinus bungeana 'Diamant', Pinus koraiensis 'Winton' and Pinus thunbergii 'Thunderhead'.

Hi Dan,

I used to have Boston Terriers...great dogs...with the Boxer mixed in he will be a great companion and I can assure you he will dispose of the squirrels and rabbits.

Is that a bare area to the right of the dog? What's going in there?

As always...beautiful conifers...

RE: Standing guard

Hi Dave, thanks for the response. The area to the right is a stone pathway. Just to the right of that and out of the picture is a bin with garbage cans in it, so the space is utilitarian in nature ;).

Hi Dan,
Nice picture! Please can you let me know the identity of the conifer to the left of the large pot - thanks!

RE: Standing guard

Hi Richard, that's a small Picea abies 'Cupressina' purchased as a very small 2nd year graft about 5 years ago. It will eventually get way to large for the space and will have to be moved or removed but for now it's a nice vertical accent.
Thanks,
Dan

RE: Standing guard

We had a Boxer when I was a kid and my brother has two Boston Terriers. Both breeds are great. Nice pic. Looks like the dog is looking at the camera and asking "Are you gonna throw that thing for me or what?"

Dan-Beautiful dog. I have a White Boxer who is almost 3 years old that I got as a rescue when he was about 4 months. They are great dogs.

what is that.. one foot from the property line on the left....

RE: Standing guard

More like two feet Ken : ) . Just enough space to get the lawnmower by. Now see why I'm so envious of your property ;). Thanks for the responses tj and Eliot. So tell me the truth Eliot, is your white boxer still acting like a puppy at 3? I've been warned they're puppies forever. He looked a little mean in the first picture but, other than needing a 3-5 mile walk a day to keep him from bouncing off the walls, he's a good dog.

Here' a Spring and Fall comparison of another part of the yard to keep things sort of on topic :)

All of the boxers I've been around have been like puppies their entire life. Energy personified (or is that canisified?). More nice pix BTW.

Nice garden! I like the J. procubens cascading down the wall.
After living next door for your garden for years, how com your neighbor hasn't been infected with 'The Bug'?
My neighbor got infected and started a small part time nursery. He made just over $20,00 last year and still has his day job. He sells hedges. "Everybody needs a hedge", he says.

Dan-I have always heard that at 2 yrs. old dogs settle down...It was amazing how much he settled down!!!

Almost overnight it seemed. In stead of 300 MPH 24 hours a day...he's down to about 150 MPH 23 hours a day...Believe it or not...It was a HUGE difference...He actually lays down next to my chair when I'm in it...or beside the fire...Not pacing around it...

By the end of a 3 mile walk, I'm the only one who is worn out... I've got him doing hot laps around the property to wind him down when I get home from work...He can go for 15 minutes straight before he even thinks about settling down...

My buddy has a Male Old English Bulldog, same build, look, character and all, his REALLY settled down at about 4 yrs. old.

But in all honesty, I wouldn't trade him for anything...Prob the best dog I've even had, and I had some good ones. I lost my 11 year old Golden Retriever this summer...Bailey, the Boxer I got b/c I knew the Golden was getting old.

I'll try to get a pick of him up here the next couple of days. Here is a fuzzy partial he weaseled into the other day. We'll see if I can get him to sit still for long enough.

Obviously the tree was the focus, NOT the dog...

Botann, gorgeous photo! That path looks very inviting. I'm not sure why I can't the neighbors on board with gardening with conifers. My neighbor to the left is retired and cuts his grass three times per week but the only thing in his back yard is one lonely 'Autumn Blaze' maple.

Eliot thanks for the follow up about your boxer. I look forward to seeing a full picture of him.

Thanks, Dan

RE: Standing guard

Dan-Sorry it took so long, here are a couple pics of my Boxer, Bailey. I snapped these real quick...

He wasn't cooperating...something had his attention the whole time...

About 5 try's later...Every time I'd back up he'd want to follow...

I'll try to get some better ones when he's not so wound...He just wanted to run tonight...

Lotta good stuff going on in this thread. Lovely pictures as usual Dan, you have a gift. Love your stuff too Botann, your maples inspire me as always.

I love dogs but I don't have a fenced yard and with my job, I just can't leave a poor dog indoors 24+ hours. My three cats do quite well though at limiting the mole damage.

I had a hard time finding the dog too.
Looks like you and your dog had a good time in Oregon.

Reminds me of a line in a song. "Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end."
